David-Balancing after-school sports for child

Keeping balanced activities for young kids is good for their health, education and quality of life. In real life more and more parents are under a lot of  pressure to make their children perfect. They don’t care about their interests and capablities. Furthermore, it makes them not have happy childhood memories.

I have two kids, boy is 9-year old and daughter is 6-year old. My son plays piano very well and he is willing to do this. He takes one hour lessons a week and practices 2 hours a day. He enjoys practicing and has time  to play with friends and family. My daughter dislikes piano. She chooses gymnastics and that she loves so much. She takes part in lessons 6 hours a week. She goes to dancing school 1 hour a week. She has a lot time to play with friends and to have fun with her family. I believe that  I have given them balanced after-school sports.

I don’t want to mention what benefits come from these sports. But I would like to share my experience with you. I can’t imagine that young children become involved in unbalanced program, where all the emphasis is put upon winning and success. In such a program, nothing is done to help them learn about his or her emotional self. It is bad for them.

Andres-Analyzing comments

Today’s story is about  Athletic Children.

Making exercises is always healthy and necessary for every age but it should be fun too, especially for children who need to live their childhood. Unfortunally we have got a problem when we want to take them beyond to the fun part of the “game” and we make them profesionals athletes before becoming “profesionals kids”.

Let me state my point, what I’m saying is that coachs should teach how to enjoy a game first and not put a lot of pressure on his team since they are too young and then, only then, coachs could choose the ones who really want to walk along this beautiful and short life style.

Nelly-“What Are The Dangers Of Youth Sports?”

For many kids, playing sport can be a positive experience.
Sport will help them stay in shape physically and may also help keep them mentally sharp. Some studies show that sports can have a host of beneficial psychological effects. children and teens who gain a high level of physical activity such as from sport have better self-esteem than those who are more sedentary. Those who engage in physical activity often have better social  skill. Physical exercise such as that gained via sports helps to alleviate symptoms that are associated with mild to moderate depression. It also can reduce symptoms of anxiety. They also learn lessons about cooperation, sportsmanship, goal setting and competition.
But like any activity, youth sports have some disadvantages.
Burnout is a very real risk for a child in any sport, and it’s even more likely the sport becomes more of a chore than a game. Often kids put too much strain on growing muscles and bones without parents stepping in to help them stay safe. Certainly kids can get hurt in their first day of sport participation but cautious and coaches should be aware of the injury risks and make sure kids have the right equipment and activity schedule to increase their chances of remaining injury-free.
Several social pressures and abuses can affect young people in sports. Self-consciousness among lesser-developed teens can cause upset and doubt about performance ability as young teens compare themselves to fitter or sportier classmates. Highly competitive sports can also take their toll on your child. A coach or parent who pushes a child to achieve impossibly high standards or who abuses, name-calls or berates a child who does not perform as expected can cause serious damage to the child’s mental health. The psychological damage caused by such abuse is often a hidden danger of competitive sports.
Youth people who are well-organized and can balance the demands of school, family and other activities can usually slot sports into their lives without much trouble. But as youth sports have become more sophisticated such as year-round training programs for high school student the ability to manage all those demands becomes increasingly difficult.

Kiyomichi – My idea for child athletes

I know there are many child athletes who are trained with coach and parents. Especially they are  playing in the specific sports like Figure Skating, Gymnastic, Tennis etc.

Some athlets have gotten the success in younger age, but sometimes they encountered any problems after getting success. It is called as “Burnout Syndrome”. After getting the victory, some athletes doesn’t keep their motivation. And finally they decided the early retire without any significant reason. I don’t know why does it happen exactly but I suppose that too many trainings spoild their ordinal growing of mind. And their suppoting staffs also concentrated to focuss only their physical training. Therefore most of child athlets have a strong capability for their athletics but their mind is not growned according their age.

How to prevent that kind of problems? My ideas are as follows

  • Intensive mental training
  • Prohibit to play too young aged athlets
  • Periodical refreshment applied

Usually human’s life is longer than their athletic period. Appropreated education for child athlets is very important I believe.

Dan-Happyness is the most important!

Happyness & sucess, which is important for a child? I think to sacrifice happyness and other parts of child’s life to obtain success is not fair for children.

As children, they are supposed to grow up with health both in physical and mental sides. That’s all they need to do. If they can do more besides it, it’s wonderful. But to sacrifice happyness which may be harmful to their physical & mental healthy for success, it doesn’t worth it as it will be negative to people’s long term achivement when they grow up.

So my opinion is that, success is kind of thing for adults while growing up with happyness is the most imporatant for children.
